An Israeli Barack Obama?

hared d7a7d79a1 images6

Nope. Not this elections anway, but we might as well get informed. Here are a few ways to see what’s up and decide how to vote:

  1. Have you gotten your voting card in the mail yet? If not, call Misrad Hapnim or go here to see where you need to go to vote.
  2. There is an English event to meet the candidates: Saturday Jan 31 20:00 at the Great Synagogue 56 King George St. in Jerusalem. Insider advice: Get there realy early!
  3. There is an event to hear about young people in politics at Jerusalem Hub, Monday Feb 2nd at 20:30 64 Emek Refaim St.

Click here for the Israeli Election Compass. This is so cool. I am a politics nerd and this is my website mecca. So cool.

Here is a rundown of some of the smaller parties I might be voting for if there wasn’t a great female candidate running for PM. This does not count Kadima, Against My Better Judgement › Edit Post — WordPressLikud, Labor, Shas, Yisrael Beiteinu, Meretz. They are the usual parties, with some new slogans and some new players. Check out their sites for more info…

Small Parties that come in Big Packages:

  • Hadash: This is an attempt to build a party with Arabs and Jews. They have a very intersting mix of Arab and Jewish men and women, activsts running on their list. Very left wing and a very important voice that needs to be heard in the wake of the war we are still recovering from.
  • Green Party: These fluffy tree huggers will always have a place in my heart. Their vision is noble and I believe that if they get a few seats they would be a great voice for some important issues like the enviorment, water and land conservation. Their platform is liberal but also Zionism. I like it.
  • ACHRAYUT - “Revolution in Values and Constitutional Reform” I read as much as I could of their website before falling asleep, I didn’t understand what they stand for but there has been some buzz. I am not impressed with 3 women out of their top 10 men.
  • Gil- Gimlaim: These are the cute old people that ended up high on the polls when out last elections closed. They got way too many seats and they teater-totter around the Knesset, being bought out as a swing vote in every law that goes up to pass. In theory, its a nice idea, but too many little parties like these weak, easily bought ones and we have ourselves a repete of the last impotent government. Go idealistic, or go home, I say. Age is not a basis for voting.
  • Aleh Yarok- Green Leaf. I am all for legalizing “it” especially now that I’ve seen Pineapple Express, which has my vote for Best Drama and Best Actor at the Oscars this year. But I would sooner vote for those rambling senior citizens than vote with these guys. They seem to be making an effort this time around but still all seems like a joke to them and that’s problemativ for me. Although I’m sure that if I was smoking what they are smoking, I’d be laughing too.
  • Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home): This is the Mafdal in disguise. It is the Mafdal- their top ten includes 2 impressive women and an Ethiopian Dr, who I coincidentaly saw in the supermarket yesterday. If you are nationally religiously afiliated– you know who you are– this isn’t a horrible options, although I’m sure they aren’t standing in line to help me with my Get or support LGBT rights…
  • Tzabar: The young people’s movement. This would be my pick if I wasn’t in love with Tzipi. They have 3 women, a gay guy and an Ethiopian activist on their list, they are all in their 20’s and 30’s, all academics, activists, community organizers. It’s very idealistic and nice like Hitorerut’s run in the Jerusalem municipal race. In fact, their website looks exactly the same and they use all the same gimicks. Really weird.
  • Yeruka-Meimad: A really interesting mix of politicians and activists claiming to be the social-environmental alternative to politics at hand. They have what looks like 4 men and 4 women as their top 8, religious and secular. Very interesting, loft goals but there are some realy politicians on this list that could actually make things happen. They might actually be a real alternative to a big party if they get votes.
  • There are a ton of other parties but I didn’t find them interesting enough to research. Go here to see all parties and their list of candidates.

HAPPY VOTING!
